In this professional learning workshop inspired by Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) exhibition Anina Major: The Sacred Mangrove, explore how ceramic works honor and memorialize traditional Bahamian palm-weaving. Together, we will investigate artist Anina Major’s sculptural practice and the intersection between traditional material culture and contemporary art.

This workshop aims to lay a foundation for educators to implement object-based curriculum into their art classrooms through exhibition-specific exercises. In part one, PAMM teaching artists will lead educators in dialogue using strategies that support visual literacy, critical thinking and inference-making, and creating personal connections to art objects. Educators will explore the historical and contemporary contexts that shape material culture in the Caribbean and beyond.  In part two, art artists will lead educators in a hands-on artmaking opportunity inspired by Major’s emphasis on craft and cultural preservation
